East Finchley in half a day: woods, cinema and pizza

East Finchley works best when you stop treating it as a place to tick off. This is a compact North London afternoon: a walk under trees, a film if the timing suits you, then dinner in a room shared with classic cars.

The short version: start beside East Finchley station in Cherry Tree Wood, check the live programme at the Phoenix Cinema, and finish at 67 Sourdough on Great North Road. Allow four to six hours if you include a film. Check both businesses before travelling because cinema times and restaurant opening hours change.

Start with the easy bit

Cherry Tree Wood sits beside East Finchley Underground station, so there is no complicated first transfer. Barnet Council lists a café, playground, tennis courts and wildlife areas among its facilities. It is a neighbourhood park rather than a grand London attraction, which is precisely why it is a useful place to slow down after the Tube.

Give it 30 to 60 minutes. If the ground is wet, keep this section short and move on; the rest of the plan is indoors.

Build the afternoon around the film

The Phoenix Cinema is at 52 High Road. Barnet describes its programme as a mixture of new releases, foreign-language films and specialist titles. Do not assume a screening will begin exactly when you arrive: open the cinema's live listings first, choose a film, then arrange the park and meal around it.

If nothing appeals, skip the cinema rather than filling two hours for the sake of the itinerary. East Finchley High Road is better used for an unhurried coffee and a browse of the local shops.

End with pizza and cars

67 Sourdough is at 82–92 Great North Road, near the station. It shares its setting with a classic-car showroom, so the machinery is part of the real space rather than restaurant decoration. Displays can change, especially around events; go because the combination interests you, not because you expect one particular car.

The venue currently says it is cashless, wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly. Its published hours close the restaurant on Monday and Tuesday, with limited hours on other days. Use the official menu and booking calendar on the day: this route does not work if you arrive after the kitchen has closed.

What the afternoon costs

The park costs nothing. Cinema tickets and restaurant prices depend on the date and order, so the honest budget is whatever appears on their official booking and menu pages when you go. Do not use an old blog price as a target. Add your TfL journey, a drink and any snacks before deciding whether this is a cheap afternoon for you.

A sensible way to control the total is to choose the film or the sit-down meal as the main paid event rather than adding extras automatically. If you only want the neighbourhood walk, the park and High Road still work without either booking.

A sensible order

1. Arrive at East Finchley and walk through Cherry Tree Wood.
2. See a pre-selected film at the Phoenix, or spend the same time on the High Road.
3. Walk back towards Great North Road for dinner at 67 Sourdough.
4. Use the same station for the journey home.

Build in 15 minutes between each stop instead of planning to the exact minute. A film can end later than expected, wet paths can slow the walk and a restaurant booking is easier to enjoy when it is not another deadline.

This is not a 'top ten' day. It is a practical little neighbourhood plan with very little transport between stops, which is often more enjoyable than crossing London three times.
