A North London day for people who like planes, cars and pizza

London has enough transport history to fill a week, but this day keeps the idea simple: aircraft in Colindale, then classic cars and pizza in East Finchley. The two stops are not next door, so the plan works only if you leave time for the journey between them.

The short version: reserve a free entry slot for the RAF Museum London, arrive near opening time, then use TfL's live journey planner to reach East Finchley for dinner at 67 Sourdough. The museum is free; food, paid museum extras and transport are not. Avoid Monday and Tuesday because the restaurant currently closes on both days.

There are several hangars, so this is not a quick room of aircraft. Arriving at 10am gives you space to look properly without watching the clock. Some experiences and events cost extra; decide on those before the visit rather than assuming the entire day is free.

The nearest Underground stop is Colindale on the Edgware branch of the Northern line. Check for engineering work, particularly at weekends, and follow the museum's current directions from the station.

Make the museum easier

Start with the aircraft or period that interests you most instead of moving through every display in strict order. Photograph the museum map or keep it open on your phone, because returning across several hangars can consume the final hour. If you are visiting with children or someone who tires easily, agree on a lunch break before everyone is hungry.

Finish among classic cars

67 Sourdough operates at 82–92 Great North Road, N2 0NL, in a space connected with a classic-car showroom. The restaurant says it is cashless, wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly. Its official menu lists opening from Wednesday to Sunday, with Monday and Tuesday closed, but always confirm the live hours before setting off.

The collection around the dining area can change, so no particular Porsche or other model should be treated as guaranteed. That uncertainty is part of a functioning showroom.

The version that actually works

• Book the museum's free entry slot for 10am or shortly afterwards.
• Spend three to five hours in the hangars, depending on your interest.
• Check TfL before leaving Colindale and travel to East Finchley.
• Reserve the restaurant if your timing is fixed, especially for a group.

Carry water and leave room in the budget for lunch, transport and any museum add-on you deliberately choose. Free admission is useful, but it does not make an entire day in London cost nothing.

It is a niche day, and that is its strength. Someone indifferent to machines will probably prefer Greenwich or a market. For an aviation and motoring fan, it creates a clear theme without inventing a forced central-London checklist.
